The selection of vegan apps has grown exponentially recently.  Are you newly vegan and looking for some guidance while out in the big world?  With all the reasons to become vegan, from health to environmental to animal agriculture concerns, today’s tech has your back!  There are several good vegan apps that make the transition easier and slip-ups further between.  They are indispensable for those who have recently transitioned and are not yet as familiar with the lifestyle as those who’ve been enjoying this lifestyle for a time.

When I initially went vegan, I was vegan for the animals.  I remember reading the ingredient lists, and seeing such strange ingredients that I’d never known were not vegan.  I used to love onion rings and didn’t realize that the batter they are coated with contains eggs.  Roasted peanuts sometimes are coated in gelatine to make the flavorings stick to them.  And Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies!  So sneaky those food manufacturers are!!  Some of these vegan apps were lifesavers as I went through my transition from a total newbie.

Fortunately, rather than just throwing in the towel because of my screw-ups, I tucked those newly learned facts into my mind and moved on, learning from my mistakes.  No one is perfect, and simply being vegan doesn’t make one any closer to perfection.

Happy Cow:

For starters, this is a paid app that is available in 183 countries and makes finding local vegan, vegetarian fare and establishments with vegan options easier than ever.  You can not only search for places to eat, but also read reviews from other users, as well as get contact information for the restaurants, bars etc listed.

21 Day Vegan Kickstart:

Following a giant, this app gives a meal plan for 21 days, to follow as closely as you’d like, or use just for inspiration.  These whole food plant based meals are developed with chefs and dieticians for delicious, yet healthy options.

Forks Over Knives:

Together with the 21-day vegan kickstart, these two offer the healthiest recipes.  FOK is another paid app that has over 400 whole food, plant-based recipes with shopping lists included making the shopping even easier.  These recipes are updated weekly also, to keep them fresh.

Vegan Air:

Next up, a great app for frequent fliers, this app helps you to figure out if the airports you are traveling through have vegan options.  Helps you to know beforehand if you’ll need to bring your own foods or snacks.

Veggie Alternatives:

This app makes finding vegan alternatives to meat, dairy and eggs easier.  Gives recommendations for substitutions in your favorite recipes.  This allows you to convert your favorite recipes to healthier versions, so you can stick more closely with what you are already familiar with and know you enjoy.

VKind:

This app helps you find vegan brands, businesses and professionals near you.  Think vegan plummers, doctors, etc.  Makes it easy to connect with businesses and professionals whose values align with yours.

Vegan Health & Fitness App:

Has so many actionable tips for going vegan while still being able to work out and make vegains.  (See what I did there?) haha!  A good resource for anyone who is on the exercise bandwagon.

Is It Vegan:

Simply scan a barcode to find out if an item is vegan or not.  They are constantly expanding their database and can make it so much easier when you are newly vegan and unfamiliar with all of the strange wording for non-vegan items that aren’t obvious.   This is one of the ones that I used most as a new vegan.

Abillion:

A social platform with all things vegan, cruelty-free and sustainable.  This vegan app boasts recommendations for food at restaurants, as well as recipes.  People from over 130 countries are on the app, so it is growing quickly.

Vegan Maps:

Last but certainly not least, a free app that has a list of over 10,000 vegan and raw food eateries in 150 countries.  They will send you notifications of new vegan food places opening up near you, as well as a searchable database.

Certainly there are plenty of options for apps available.  There’s no need to have all of them.  Just look at what each offers, and pick those that would benefit you the most.

Have you tried any of these vegan apps?  Do you have other favorites?  If you have any particular recommendations, I’d love to hear them.  Please share in the comments below!
